Elsie G. Riddick was born in Gates County, N.C., the daughter of Elbert and Cornelia (Speight) Riddick. She attended the North Carolina Normal and Industrial School at Greensboro, N.C., and after graduating in 1897 went to work for the Agricultural Commission in Raleigh.
